Lydia screamed, and her bear feet slapped into wet earth, heels long since discarded for the need of a quicker gait. Her arm was lashed around her middle, a makeshift tourniquet for the jagged gash at her naval. Blood splashed hot and thick on her skin and she cried out again, almost stumbling and falling to her knees as her world gave a wild, tipsy spin.
Had to keep going. Had to keep fighting. They were just beyond her. Morrell’s—men? Allies?—she didn’t know. She only knew that the bite of the knife into her flesh was cold and hot all at once, had given her just enough of an adrenaline kick to force her to run again.
Was someone calling for her? Was that Stiles? Oh please. This time it was a sob that escaped her as she did stumble, clawing at wet earth, pushing herself back to her feet as she turned left and veered toward the sound of her name.
"Help!" The words scrapped like broken glass shards up her throat, but it didn’t come out as a scream. It came out gurgled, blood dribbling out from the corners of her mouth. She knew that wasn’t good. Hemoptysis, expectoration of blood from the bronchi, larynx, trachea, or lungs. You could drown in your own blood—was she going to drown in her own blood?
No. Don’t think about it.
"Please. I’m over here! Hurry?" Her fingers slipped along the bloody wound on her stomach, her lacy shirt sagging around her like she had just been dunked in the river, sticky and sickening. Her legs threatened to buckle beneath even her slight weight. "Allison! Stiles?”
Someone? Anyone. Her visions swarmed with black dots that she struggled to strive off. She didn’t even realize she had landed face-first into the dirt against until she inhaled the thick smell of wet earth. She pawed weakly at the ground, lightning colors flashing like a projector on her closed lids, as she ordered herself to get up. To move.
Her legs refused to obey.
